Pia is sharing her knowledge on Groom skincare again today, focusing on what men can do to get their skin “wedding-ready”
Us girls like to fuss over our skin and other beauty routines, whereas guys, on the other hand would rather be surfing, exercising or playing Xbox!
Unfortunately, men also have skin issues, that can be worrying for them as their wedding day approaches. Pia discusses some common male skin issues today as well as how to treat them before your big day!

Men generally have oilier, thicker skin than women, due to their high levels of testosterone. They are often prone to blackheads, enlarged pores, scars from teenage acne, shaving rash & sun damage from not wearing SPF.
Here are suggestions that could help these conditions:
- Blackheads:
I would suggest the first step would be to have a facial so that the facialist can do a manual extraction and then the male client can start a regime to keep the blackheads at bay. A face wash containing salicylic acid would help as it would keep the pores clean on a daily basis. Or a fruit acid cleaner would help too. If the blackheads are extremely bad, then a course of skin peels would be suggested at least 6 weeks before the wedding.Image may be NSFW.

These are caused by the skin producing too much sebum, once the pores are stretched, it’s difficult to get them back to their original size. A course of skin needling would treat this condition but would need to start at least 4 weeks before the wedding. Using a pore refiner or pore reduction drops would also be suggested. Scarring would also be treated with skin needling as well as a topical Vitamin A product to normalise the cell turnover.Image may be NSFW.

This is a tough one, as there are many reasons why this would be happening. It could be the skin is reacting to the shaving cream or gel, so I would suggest using one for sensitive skins. There are shaving oils on the market that only foam slightly that have proven to be very effective in treating shaving rash. Using an old razor that is blunt can cause a rash. Also be careful of using aftershave on the newly shaved area, they can contain alcohol which will also irritate the skin. Ingrown hairs are often a problem after shaving, so I would suggest shaving every day so that the hair doesn’t have time to grow back in. A mild home skin peel will also help alleviate ingrown hairs. In-salon skin peels would also be recommended.Image may be NSFW.

I would suggest starting to use a daily SPF for sun-damaged skin. As well as a course of Vitamin C salon treatments, as this would be the fastest way to improve the damage before the wedding. I would also recommend Vitamin A & C home products as both protect the skin from the sun.Image may be NSFW.

Yes, you can have a facial if you have a beard, guys!
We treat the bearded area of the skin exactly as we treat the rest of the skin. All the products during a skin treatment are removed before serums & moisturizers are applied. We apply everything to the beard and just massage more to ensure that the product hits the skin and not just the hair. More product is used, as much of the hair gets coated with the product, the aim is to get as much onto the skin as possible. Guys with beards need to use a face wash with an exfoliating property in it, they need to use a serum & moisturizer (if they can) and an SPF during the day.Dandruff in the beard can be one of two things:
1. Dry skin or 2. Seborrheic dermatitis.
Dry skin can be treated with peeling & moisturizing. Ideally, he should go for a peel, after which the skin therapist could recommend a moisturizer. Men’s skincare products are often heavily perfumed, so I would suggest a moisturizer with no fragrance & no colorants.
Seborrheic dermatitis is more complicated as it is a fungal infection brought on by leaky gut syndrome & is therefore quite difficult to treat. Generally all ‘dandruff’ in beards is caused by seborrheic dermatitis. Please consult with a dermatologist if you are suffering from this. Image may be NSFW.

Pia’s final thoughts…
Research has proven that the skin starts showing visible improvement after a minimum of 3 in-salon skin treatments, therefore planning to start an in-salon & home-care skin regime at least 4 months before the wedding would be recommended. Using a clay mask at home would be very beneficial to grooms as it will control the excessive sebum production. A salicylic acid mask will control both the sebum production as well as help to resurface the skin before the big day. It’s important for the groom to be proactive about his skin and seek the advice of a skin therapist.Image may be NSFW.
