Guys! Our first real wedding under our new re-brand,
and boy do we have a goodie for you!
Everything about Kyle and Mimi’s special day was executed to perfection.
From the smallest detail, like Mimi’s beach inspired jewellery to the absolute tropical oasis, Oh Happy Day created,
we just knew, we HAD to feature this gem of a wedding.
We had a chat with both the bride, Mimi, and Jo from Oh Happy Day to find out more about this wedding that was obviously already in 2019 while we were all stuck in 2018 (2019 wedding trends on point!)
Hooray: Hi guys, please tell us a bit more about yourselves.
Mimi: Hi! I am Michelle (aka Mimi) Muir and my husband is Kyle Muir. We met each other in Barcelona in 2011 through mutual friends while we were both working on the yachts. I left the industry at the end of that year to move home and it wasn’t until 2014, when he was home on a holiday, that he finally plucked up the courage to ask me out on a date. We were inseparable for that month that he was home, both thinking it was just going to be a holiday romance, but Cupid’s arrow caught us both and we have been together now for 4,5 years.
Hooray: Tell us about your proposal
Mimi: Kyle only asked my Dad for permission to marry me the day before he proposed. He thought someone would let the “cat out the bag” if he had asked too far in advance, which is probably true, as my Dad almost let it slip at Christmas Eve dinner – only a few hours after giving him his blessing! We have a morning ritual in summer where we go for an early morning swim at the beach. He was planning to do it on Christmas Day, just after our swim, but he panicked when he saw how many families had headed down early that same morning. Long story cut short, it was a perfect, simple and sincere proposal in our bedroom. He was so nervous, sweating and shaking, even though he knew that my answer would be YES. With me in shock and him trying to calm his nerves, we had to google what finger the ring went on because we couldn’t think straight!!
Hooray: What was the one non-negotiable of your wedding?
Mimi: Luckily, Kyle and I were on the same page – we were adamant on having a local wedding where majority of our guests didn’t have to travel far. We wanted a relaxed, cocktail style wedding.
Hooray: How did you choose your photographer?
Mimi: I had seen Wilma Towell’s beautiful photography pop up a couple of times on my Instagram as friends had done photo shoots with her, so I started following her and the first thing I noticed is how natural and relaxed everyone seemed in front of the camera, which is exactly what I was looking for.
Hooray: Be honest, how many hours did you spend on Pinterest?
Mimi: I am not so much a fan of Pinterest. I find more inspiration on Instagram, but with that being said, I knew exactly what I wanted from the beginning and Joelene from Oh Happy Day was an absolute superstar in bringing it all to life.
**Hooray side note – YAY to no Pinterest!
Hooray: Tell us about your bridesmaids and groomsmen?
Mimi: My 3 bridesmaids were my sister and two best friends. Kyle had 4 of his best friends as groomsmen. They were all incredible, every step of the way. The best part is that most of them are already married, so they gave us sound advice which put Kyle and I at ease. I feel we hit the jackpot with our bridal party.
Hooray: What role did your parents play in your wedding?
Mimi: My Mom came along with me to every dress fitting to give her very honest second opinion, which I am so grateful for. My Dad was absolutely phenomenal and so generous with his contribution to the wedding. With Kyle working overseas, they provided me with a little extra emotional support and love during the build up to the big day…no words can describe how thankful I am for them both.
Hooray: The best moment of your wedding day?
Mimi: The whole day was just the best, but other than the obvious of seeing each other at the alter and saying our “I do’s”…I will never forget arriving at the wedding venue that morning to get ready and seeing everything set up. I had been awake since 1am that morning and was feeling every emotion under the sun, but as soon as I walked through those doors, I felt a wave of peace and contentment come over me. For Kyle it was once all the formalities were over and he could really relax.
Hooray: The one thing you would change about your wedding if you could travel back in time
THE WIND!!!! We got married on the beach and didn’t really have a Plan B for bad weather. We were brave and just really trusted that the weather gods would play things in our favour. Everything was absolutely perfect, but the wind picked up in the afternoon which thankfully cooled the 27 degree weather down a bit, but made it challenging for my bridesmaids and I to walk down the aisle in our very flowy, slit dresses.
Hooray: The biggest hurdle you faced planning your wedding?
Mimi: I honestly feel like I had no hurdles in planning our wedding. I have my dear friend Joelene from Oh Happy Day to thank for this though. I am a bit of a procrastinator and leave everything to last minute and I shudder to think how many hurdles I would have faced without her by my side.
Speaking of Jo, let’s hear a bit from her about this fabulous day…
Hooray: What was your favourite part about planning this wedding?
Jo: When a bride has complete trust in us with our vision for the day, it allows us the creative freedom required to style and execute a wedding of this nature.
To be able to plan a wedding for a friend was my favourite part of planning this wedding. Mimi and I go way back, so I knew what kind of ‘personality’ we wanted to bring to her wedding. I think the entire style of the day embodies both her and Kyle as a couple. Chilled but stylish, and super trendy.
Hooray: What challenges did you have to overcome?
Jo: We always planned on a beach ceremony, but the wind gave us a few challenges on the day. Other than that, it was a smooth execution.
Hooray: Any whoopsies on the day?
Jo: Nope. Our team of coordinators were on the ball and everything flowed perfectly.
Hooray: What part of the day were you absolutely in love with?
Jo: My fave part of a wedding is always the ceremony. Seeing my friend Mimi in her dress, about to walk down the aisle to Kyle is going to be something I’ll remember for a long time. Mims isn’t a very emotional person but she had such grace and humility on the day of her wedding, it was beautiful to witness (both as a friend and wedding planner).
Hooray: Advice to brides wanting a similar wedding?
Jo: Get a planner – someone you can trust – to run with this day. There were tons of logistics to take into consideration and it’s not the kind of thing you want to handle on the day of your wedding. Also have a back up plan for bad weather – always remember that as much as you wish for a sunny day, it’s out of your control. The best thing you can do is have some kind of contingency plan in place. Your planner will be able to advise you on this.
Thank you to Mimi and Jo for sharing with us!
To Kyle and Mimi, The Hooray Team wishes you many more years together,
relaxed and full of love – just like your special day!
