Hooray: Tell us a bit about yourself.
Mary: Hi! I’m Mary-Ann and I am a live wedding painter and wedding artist! I love good books, new paintbrushes, red lipstick and gigantic cups of tea!

Hooray: How did you get into painting jackets?
Mary: The painted jackets are a new addition to my business. I love floral portraits and bouquet portraits, and I have a ridiculous amount of floral clothing in my wardrobe. I’ve seen some custom painted leather online and so I decided to give it a try, and I found I absolutely love the way leather makes my floral paintings pop!
Hooray: Do you have a favourite jacket that you have designed?
Mary: Yes! I love both of the “Bloom” jackets I have created, and I am super excited about some of the designs I have in production at the moment for some brides.
***Hooray side note: We cannot WAIT to see these designs!
Hooray: What would your dream commission be?
Mary: I have a secret fan girl dream of painting Ed Sheeran’s wedding! But on a more realistic note, I have some dream weddings coming up soon at venues I have been dying to paint at: Boschendal and Molenvliet! I would also love to paint a wedding at Babylonstoren and at Die Woud
So now that we know a little more about you, can you give us some more information on the process of purchasing a jacket?
Hooray: Do you supply the jackets or do the clients?
Mary: Either can be arranged. Generally I supply the jackets, but I am able to customize jackets or handbags supplied by a client.
Hooray: Give us an idea of your price range?
Mary: The standard price for one of my custom painted jackets is R 1,850.00.

Hooray: Is every painting unique or do clients have to choose from a template?
Mary: Currently every painting is unique, but I am planning some more template based designs in the future. The client specifies the phrase they would like, the florals they want me to incorporate and the colours they would like the flowers and lettering to be.
Hooray: Do you only paint on leather? Or have you been asked to paint on denim or another kind of jacket?
Mary: I am currently busy testing other fabrics, as I would love to customise some denim jackets in future Keep an eye on my Instagram, as I am hoping to show some denim jackets there soon!
Hooray: What is the expected turnaround time?
Mary: Due to the waiting list for a jacket it generally takes around 6 weeks from when the deposit is received, but if an order is urgent I can always make a plan to ensure the jacket is ready on time.

Hooray: Do you courier when the work is done? Is it included in the costs?
Mary: Postage within South Africa is included in the costs, and overseas shipping can be arranged.
Hooray: What is the life expectancy of the paint on the jacket?
Mary: If the jacket is properly cared for, the paint will last the lifetime of the jacket. Jackets should be wiped down with a soft damp cloth, and cannot be dry cleaned or put in the washing machine (as is standard with leather or faux leather jackets). Strong detergents or excessive heat may damage the jackets or the paint.

Hooray: If you had once piece of advice for brides, what would you share?
Mary: Remember to take time out from the wedding planning process and just kick back with your fiancé, family and friends. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the intensity of wedding planning and forget to nurture those important relationships, but when you look back on your wedding and wedding planning, you will remember the times spent with the people you love more than you will remember whether you went with peonies or poppies for the bouquet.
Mary, thank you so much for sharing with us.
